Two Florida lawmakers have filed a bill called "Caylee's Law". The new law will make it a felony to fail to report a missing child or a child's death within a certain time frame. Currently, failure to report a person missing is only a misdemeanor.
The bill (HB 37) is sponsored by Rep. Jose Felix Diaz, R-Miami, and Rep. Scott Plakon, R-Longwood.
The three-page bill makes it a felony if a parent or caregiver does not report a child under 12 as missing after a 48-hour period. It will also make it a felony to not report a child's death or the location of a child's corpse to police within two hours of a child's death.
A Senate sponsor is needed for the bill. Senator Greg Evers, R-Baker, has said he wants to hold a hearing on the issue.
Had such a law been in existence in 2008, Casey Anthony would have been charged with a felony for not reporting Caylee missing, and the travesty of Tuesday's verdict would have never occurred.
